SeaWorld veterinarians have successfully completed a Cesarean section on a shark, marking the first time the theme park's vets have performed the procedure on one of the ocean predators.
The C-section was performed July 18 on a whitetip reef shark at Discovery Cove, SeaWorld's boutique sister park in Orlando.
SeaWorld said vets had noticed a “complication” with the shark's pregnancy six months into its gestation and determined the emergency procedure was necessary.
The shark gave birth to four healthy pups, each weighing less than three pounds and measuring about two feet in length.
SeaWorld said the mother shark and pups are doing well and are eating and behaving normally.
