Pennsylvania town to drop ‘shroom for New Year’s

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. – A Pennsylvania town is starting a mushroom drop ceremony to celebrate the start of the New Year.

Officials in Kennett Square say that at the stroke of midnight, a giant, lighted mushroom will be lowered 80 feet from a crane in the center of town, radio station KYW reports. The town is about 40 miles southwest of Philadelphia, and it bills itself as the Mushroom Capital of the World because of extensive mushroom farming in the area.

The stainless steel mushroom is about eight feet wide and 7 1/2 feet tall, and weighs almost 700 pounds.
