VIENNA, Mo. (AP) — Country music singer and songwriter Leona Williams is getting a highway named in her honor in her rural hometown in central Missouri.
A dedication ceremony is scheduled Sunday in Vienna to designate a stretch of U.S. 63 as the "Leona Williams Highway."
Williams began singing at age 15 on a Jefferson City radio station and eventually moved to Nashville, Tenn. She teamed up on several songs with Merle Haggard, to whom she was married for a while. She later married singer Dave Kirby and performed at shows in Branson.
After a private highway dedication ceremony, Williams plans to put on a public concert with her son, Ron Williams, at the Vienna High School gymnasium. Proceeds are to go to the school library.
