Tracking device helps deputies find missing man

Published:

Hillsborough County authorities needed roughly 12 minutes Sunday morning to find a man missing for 5 hours.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received a missing person call about 4:53 a.m. Sunday concerning John Morgan, 84. He had been missing from 5401 Taylor Road in Lutz and was last seen five hours prior, deputies said.

Although aerial units could not be used due to fog cover, Morgan, diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease, was wearing a location device called SafetyNet by LoJack. When deputies and a SafetyNet response team arrived, they used digital receivers to find Morgan’s signal.

Following a 12 minute search, Morgan was found just .3 miles south of his original location in a heavily wooded area. He suffered superficial cuts to his head and leg, according to deputies.

Those wearing the small personal transmitter who are subscribed to location services can be found through the signals it emits. If a person is missing, a caregiver can call a local SafetyNet by LoJack agency and a SafetyNet emergency team responds to the area.
