The 1952 photo is a black-and-white image, but one can imagine the bright white roof on this early example of a Howard Johnson’s restaurant at 3720 W. Gandy Blvd., on the southeast corner of South Dale Mabry Highway. According to Tribune reader L. Dennis Craig, it was originally built as an ice cream shop, offering 28 different flavors of ice cream. “I think I had most of them while growing up in the neighborhood,” he said. “Later on, the Cone family built a Howard Johnson’s motel behind the establishment.”

What remained of that motel was recently demolished and the land cleared for construction of the Encore Commons project that will house soon-to-be-announced retailers.
