Fundraiser set to improve Lutz baseball facilities

Published:

— Baseball in Lutz has always been “cool,” but organizers feel it is time to raise money to keep Lutz baseball facilities on par with other organizations in Hillsborough County.

The organization is planning a Lutz Baseball Capital Improvement fundraiser to stretch over two days in September. The goal is to raise money to replace batting cages and nets, make field improvements and other changes at Oscar Cooler Park. The Lutz youth baseball association has always thrived, but Event Coordinator Heather Hodges said that changes need to be made.

“It’s a lot, but the goal is to raise about $50,000 to bring the park up to standard,” Hodges said.

On Sept. 14, there will be a “Domingo Day” with local baseball celebrity Domingo Ayala from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. He will host a “beisbol” clinic with hitting and throwing contests for kids. Play It Again Sports is hosting the event and will be selling sporting goods in the parking lot throughout the day. The registration fee is $25 and it includes lunch and participation in the contests.

On Sept. 15, the event moves to Avila Golf Club for a celebrity-filled golf event that will feature sports celebrities including Shelton Quarles, Fred McGriff, Jody Reed, Toby Hall and many more. Former Tampa Bay Rays manager Lou Pinella will also attend and deliver the keynote address.

Advance tickets can be purchased at lutzbase ball.com.
